Resolve Your Urgent Dental Needs With Emergency Services Provided in Phoenix, AZ
No one likes to wake up to a painful tooth, a loose crown, or other unexpected dental issues. It can be a headache to try to get in to see your dentist for emergency services while you are in pain or can’t chew on one side of your mouth. Many dental offices are open limited hours, closed on Fridays, or can’t see patients the same day. Dr. Justin Frost at Biltmore Dental Center in Phoenix, AZ is prepared to help patients with all types of emergency dental issues and prioritizes seeing patients with dental emergencies on the same day whenever possible.
Common Emergency Dental Needs
There are several reasons you may need to urgently see a dentist. Following are some common issues that require emergency dental care.
Broken, cracked, or chipped tooth: Teeth can break or chip when trauma to the mouth occurs. A cracked tooth may not be painful, but it is important to get it evaluated by your dentist to ensure that the nerve is not exposed, or the crack does not lead to tooth decay.
Teeth that are loose or knocked out: Like cracked teeth, loose teeth or teeth that have been knocked out due to trauma are an issue that your dentist should evaluate as soon as possible. If your tooth is knocked out, it may be possible to save the tooth if you get care fast enough. To help preserve your tooth while you get to the dentist:
- Most importantly, you should keep the tooth moist. If it is possible, reposition the tooth in the socket that it was knocked out of. If that is not feasible, keep the tooth under your tongue while you are on your way to the dentist, or put it in a sterile container such as a cup or a bag and cover the tooth with your saliva or milk.
- Only hold the tooth by the crown, or the part of the tooth that you see in your mouth. Touching the root can cause further damage and make it impossible to repair.
- If you see dirt on the tooth, use milk to soak it off. Do not use any fabric to clean it off because this can cause permanent damage to the tooth fibers.
Loose dental work: Old crowns, fillings, or bridges may come loose due to a variety of issues such as normal wear and tear, tooth decay, or tooth grinding. If dental work comes loose in your mouth, contact your dentist so they can assess the cause and repair it.
Wisdom tooth infection: Another common reason you may need to seek emergency dental care is if one of your wisdom teeth becomes infected. These are the molars in the very back of your mouth that typically grow in between the ages of 17 and 25. Because they are so far back in your mouth, wisdom teeth can be difficult to clean effectively, which can lead to tooth decay or cavities. When decay goes untreated, it can lead to an infection in your teeth, which is very painful.
Tongue or lip injuries: Trauma to your mouths such as a bitten tongue or split lip can be severe enough that your dentist should examine it. After the trauma occurs, clean the affected area with a wet cloth and place ice or a cold compress on it to help keep swelling down. If it is bleeding excessively, call your dentist.
When to Call Your Dentist for Emergency Care
If you have any of the dental issues discussed above, do not wait to call your dentist. The longer you wait to receive care, the longer you will be in pain. Waiting can also cause some dental issues to become worse, which can make treatment more intense, time-consuming, and costly.
