Phoenix patient asks, ‘If my filling fell out, would a root canal resolve the pain?’

Young girl in tooth pain

While many people may associate the words root canal with pain, actually, the situation leading up to the root canal causes an individual pain. Some of the reasons that a patient may require a root canal include:

Damage to the pulp or nerve of the tooth caused by:

  • Severe decay
  • Large filling, or a filling that fell out
  • Damage to the tooth such as cracks or chips
  • Injury to the face and mouth
  • Inflammation or infection

Although symptoms or signs that indicate the necessity of a root canal are not always apparent, some patients may experience:

  • Extreme pain while chewing or applying pressure to the tooth
  • Darkening of the tooth
  • Painful sensitivity to temperature variances that remains after the heat or cold contact has ended
  • Inflammation and sensitivity of the gums near the affected tooth
  • A pimple-like mark on the gums that stays or comes back often

A root canal treatment can save and repair the tooth. Because the nerve of the tooth serves no necessary function beyond the sensations of heat or cold, it can be removed without concern. The center chamber of the tooth houses the pulp, which contains the nerve, vessels, and other tissues. Preparation for a root canal treatment typically involves consultation, x-rays, and discussion about anesthesia or sedation. During the procedure, an access hole is created and the pulp, bacteria, nerve, and any debris is thoroughly removed and the interior of the tooth is cleaned and disinfected. After the tooth is sealed, a dental crown may be placed to protect and restore the tooth.

Dr. Sameet Koppikar at Biltmore Dental Center is an experienced and respected dental surgeon. He is committed to helping patients to achieve or restore optimal oral health with little to no discomfort. Offering sedation dentistry is one way to help our patients relax during treatment.

Sedation is monitored by a board-certified dental anesthesia specialist for ultimate safety and comfort.

Another benefit to root canal treatment at Biltmore Dental Center is that the entire procedure can be completed in one visit, including placement of a custom-designed dental crown using CEREC technology.
