Restorative and esthetic Phoenix dental crowns

Restorative and esthetic Phoenix dental crowns

Today’s dental crowns are both restorative and cosmetic. Historically, these restorations were used for “tooth repair,” simply restoring the function of a damaged tooth. Crowns first came into use by the Etruscans 2,500 years ago, and still play a crucial role in dentistry today.

When a tooth has been weakened, but the roots are healthy, a dental crown can prevent the need for a tooth extraction. A crown restoration covers all surfaces of a tooth, returning it to its normal size and shape, restoring its function and appearance, and protecting it from further damage.

Typically, a dental crown treatment would take several appointments and a waiting period while the request is sent to a laboratory where the restoration is created, and then sent back to the dentist. At Biltmore Dental Center, Dr. Sameet Koppikar can provide dental crowns in ONE appointment. So there is no waiting period.

The doctor understands how valuable your time is, and has the innovative CEREC system to provide single appointment dentistry for his patients. If the doctor determines your weakened tooth needs to be protected by a crown, it is a very quick and simple procedure.

First, the doctor will provide local anesthetic, to ensure your comfort during the procedure. Next, he will remove all decay and weakened tooth structure, then shape the remaining structure in preparation for the restoration. Next, he will take virtual impressions of the prepared tooth, not with the messy “bite the tray of goop” method that dental patients are accustomed to enduring. Your tooth is coated with a tasteless reflective powder and pictures are taken with an oral camera, creating an optical impression.

The CEREC software converts the optical impression into a 3D model in the computer program. Dr. Koppikar uses his expertise to design your restoration, adding the subtle effects that create a natural looking appearance. A block of ceramic matching the color of the adjacent teeth will be chosen and placed in the milling machine.

The software program sends the design for the crown to the milling machine, and it creates the crown in much the same way that a laboratory does. Within 10 to 20 minutes, your permanent crown is ready to be placed. The doctor will try the crown over your tooth to check fit and bite. If it meets his approval, it is polished and cemented into place. The form, function, and appearance of your tooth is restored and no return appointments are necessary.
