A root canal is a procedure in which a tooth's nerve is removed to prevent pain and discomfort. Often times a person experiences extreme pain before a root canal because the pulp (tissues surrounding the tooth's nerve) has died which can cause an infection.
During a root canal, a dentist removes the dead pulp and then cleans and seals the root canal. Depending on the damage to the tooth, your dentist may recommend a crown to place over the affected tooth. When done correctly a crown should look and feel just like a natural tooth.
Most of the time, a root canal is a relatively simple procedure with little or no discomfort involving one to three visits. Best of all, it can save your tooth and your smile!
