Fillings are used to fill cavities which are caused by tooth decay or traumatic injury. Dentists and patients today have several choices when it comes to selecting materials to repair missing, worn, damaged or decayed teeth. A dental filling can be made of several materials including amalgam which is usually silver-looking, gold or other metals, but most often today people choose porcelain or composite dental filling material which can be colored to match your natural tooth enamel.
To insert a dental filling, the dentist will clear out the decayed portion of the tooth. Then they adhere the dental filling to the natural tooth in the shape of the piece that was removed. Once completed, a dental filling should look and feel just like a natural part of the tooth.
